Forest and Outdoor Learning Award – SCQF Level 8

Forest and Outdoor Learning Award – SCQF Level 8

This is the qualification to become a Forest and Outdoor Learning Leader and run sessions in your own setting, accredited through New Battle Abbey College.

NESLOG’s Forest and Outdoor Leader training course comprises 10 tutor lead practical training days, practical assessment, self-directed study, reflective journal and portfolio work. This course gives practitioners the knowledge, experience and confidence to run Forest School programmes with groups of individuals.

NESOLG aims to provide training that is manageable, practice based and relevant to Scottish practitioners working in health, education and social work sectors. Our course acknowledges the value of creative and reflective practice and has less emphasis on written assignment. In our assessment we encourage students to make good use of a variety of media, observed practice and oral presentations when providing evidence of learning.

How the course is structured

The course is structured in five, two day modules that take place over weekends and during school holidays. Each module is a balance of eight units:

Unit 1 Being in the Forest and Outdoors

Unit 2 Knowing the Forest and Outdoors

Unit 3 Working in the Forest and Outdoors

Unit 4 Making in the Forest and Outdoors

Unit 5 Learning in the Forest and Outdoors

Unit 6 Leading in the Forest and Outdoors

Unit 7 Managing in the Forest and Outdoors

Unit 8 Legal Compliance

The course is held in Durris Woods and in the estates of Camphill School Aberdeen.

There are practical assignments and a portfolio to submit. This covers tasks such as safe tool use, lighting fires, den building and other skills. It also includes child development and how children learn. Part of the course involves identifying a suitable site, establishing and running 6 Outdoor Learning sessions. This includes creating a specific Outdoor Learning handbook for the site. It takes a minimum of 10 months to complete on a part-time basis.
